As any good parent, teacher, or coach knows, sometimes stern measures are necessary in order to achieve results. The permit for the Diamond Point Flea Market is… reinstated, as the operator has agreed to hire a contractor to clean the site on Saturday and Sunday nights. I agreed to allow this and will monitor along with Code Enforcement. We’ll be watching.
As complaints about the property escalated after flea market operations started, we have been working with Baltimore County Code Enforcement on issues at Diamond Point Shopping Center for some time now. I’m sorry for fans of the flea market, but due to repeated violations of County Code and Zoning regulations, Code Enforcement honored my request and issued an order that flea market operations must cease immediately. Our office and too many others work too hard to help clean up our community, and this should be a lesson that irresponsible treatment of trash – commercial or residential – cannot be tolerated.
Although the flea market was a legal, permitted use of the property, the County, upon my request, has revoked the outdoor sales permit at Diamond Point. While there are private legal issues currently preventing redevelopment of the site, the owner still has a responsibility to maintain the property. If we are to continue our progress toward a cleaner, more prosperous community, we all have a role to play.
